Marine's service recalls 2 others

TUNKHANNOCK - When Adam Barziloski joined the U.S. Marines a little over a year ago, he knew he had quite a military tradition behind him.
His dad, Vito B. Barziloski, had served at the end of the Vietnam War era and his granddad's brother, 2nd Lt. Vito M. Barziloski, made the ultimate sacrifice in World War II.
The younger Barziloski got something of a hero's welcome Saturday that neither of the other two received.
But no one was complaining.
Adam's great uncle was killed in action on March 1, 1945, while part of an Allied offensive on Iwo Jima in the Volcano Islands.
The 1937 graduate of Tunkhannock High Schoolwas an outastanding athlete who later was on the boxing team at the University of Idaho. When he left for service in World War II, he was under contract to play for the New York Giants.
But that never materialized.
Lance Cpl. Barziloski said he really hasn't dwelled much on his uncle's service but was happy in his own case to come back alive from Iraq after a 7-month stint there with the Marines until early October.
He is headed back to his home base at Camp LeJeune, N.C., on Monday.
Around 30 family members and friends treated him to a homecoming on Saturday afternoon, and Adam said it was good to see everyone and show them pictures of his time over in Iraq.
He said that while overseas he had a few close calls, but he'd rather not talk about them.
Adam graduated in 2003 from Tunkhannock and went to boot camp at Parris Island, S.C., in May 2005.
He left for Iraq this past March and was either on foot patrols or driving a humvee with the infantry in Ramadi. "We did what we had to do, and thankfully everyone came back alive," he said.
