In or out of uniform, leathernecks under Marine Corps Forces Command must wear their seat belts while in a vehicle, according to an Oct. 30 order.

Lt. Gen. Robert Blackman Jr., head of Norfolk, Va.-based MarForCom, issued a mandatory motor vehicle seat belt restraint order for Marines and sailors in the command. The order applies to leathernecks and sailors with Camp Lejeune, N.C.-based II Marine Expeditionary Force, which falls under MarForCom. It also affects all leathernecks at Marine Corps Forces Europe, Marine Corps Forces South and Marine Corps Bases, Atlantic.

“All personnel will wear their safety belts whether operating or riding in a motor vehicle on or off duty,” the order states. It applies on or off base and includes civilians riding in a vehicle with a service member.

The order is punitive; violators will be subject to administrative or disciplinary action.

Leathernecks and sailors have 30 days to acknowledge the order by signing it; those joining the affected commands must sign the order within seven days.
