CORONA, Calif. — David Charles Erickson, 32, a resident of Corona, Calif., passed away Oct. 21, 2006.
David was born in White Pine, Mich., on Dec. 19, 1973, the son of Kenneth and Dorothy Erickson. He attended the White Pine schools until 1987 when he moved with his family to Escanaba, graduating from the Escanaba High School in 1992.
David was an Orange County deputy sheriff for nine years and served the city of Laguna Hills as patrol deputy.
Prior to being a deputy, David was a military veteran that proudly served our country in the United States Marine Corps.
David is survived by his eight-year-old son, William Chase; his parents, Kenneth and Dorothy Erickson; his sisters, Cyndie (Joe) Wierzbicki, Connie (Andreas) Koutouzos, and Karen Erickson; his nieces and nephews, Christina Koutouzos, Courtney and Kyle Wierzbicki, and Tyler Graft; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Sulo and Sylvia Laitala, his paternal grandparents, Ever and Erma Erickson, and an infant brother, Kevin.
David’s son, Chase, brought the greatest joy to his life and he was very proud of his son. He coached Chase’s baseball team and enjoyed watching him play football, wearing “No. 4” proudly, since Chase is a Brett Favre fan, too.
Losing a son, father, brother, and great friend is so hard to realize. Family and friends will remember David affectionately for his great sense of humor and the many lives he touched. His fellow deputies, and anyone who has ever worked with David has an “Erickson story” to tell.
David’s mere presence impacted others, but he was a humble man. His stature commanded respect, yet his gentleness was greater than his strength, particularly with children, who readily approached him for another game, hug, or laugh.
David loved Michigan in the fall, and especially enjoyed hunting with his father. An avid Green Bay Packer and Brett Favre fan, he attended several home games at Lambeau Field.
He loved competing in the USPSA Hand Gun Competition and achieved Grand Master, the highest level of achievement in competition. Through this competition he met his girlfriend, Erika Smith, and the last three years of his life he shared with her were some of the happiest. Erika and his beloved dog “Cooper” brought him much joy and companionship during his last days.
Services were held at Yorba Linda Friends Church, Yorba Linda, Calif., on Oct. 27, 2006. Interment with military honors was immediately followed at Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, Calif.
A memorial service for David will be held in Ontonagon at the Siloa Lutheran Church on Saturday, Veteran’s Day, Nov. 11, 2006, at 2 p.m.
