While training in California on tracks we were solemnly warned that grunts should never eat on board or for that matter even consider boarding a track with apricot seeds. From the history I guess that the seeds would get wedged in the bilges and cause the suckers to flood and sink. Well, we took the message to heart and nothing happend at all at first. But true to superstition and grunts being the curious beings that we are we decided to place an apricot seed we found on the beach not in the track, but simply on the stack of life vests we returned after training on the water. I was the one who was selcted for this dubious task just for to test the validity of the theory. Maybe morbid curiosity and doubt of superstition is not so good after all. During the next 3 days on land a total of three tracks went down and 5 tracks worth of Marines were stuffed into two tracks for one heck of a 3 hr. ride to beach red. Moral: don't mess with apricot pits on tracks. This hit us in the form of some ear splitting expletives muffled by the butts in our faces. HEY, WHAT THE *@#& THAT SUPERSTITION IS TRUE!
