Reserve captain finishes in 16th place in marathon

Reserve Capt. Timothy Tapply, the fastest leatherneck in the Marine Corps Marathon, beat more than 32,000 runners in the 26.2-mile race through Washington, D.C., Sunday. His run time of 2 hours, 34 minutes, 42 seconds earned him 16th place out of 32,118 competitors.

The fastest active-duty Marine, Maj. Alexander Hetherington,crossed the finish line in 28th place at 2:38:36, less than 4 minutes after Tapply.

The first female Marine to complete the marathon was Reserve Maj. Patricia Restrepo, who finished at 3:11:59, 304th place overall.

The title of fastest active-duty female Marine was split between Sgt. Tara Smith and 1st Lt. Kyleanne Hunter,who both finished the race at 3:19:41 as 549th and 550th, respectively.

Ruben Garcia, a corporal in the Mexican navy, won the marathon for the second straight year with a 2:21:17 run time. The last time someone won the race for two consecutive years was Jim Hage in 1988 and 1989, a marathon spokeswoman said.

Laura Thompson, of Boise, Idaho, took the women’s race in 3:00:10.

A 56-year-old runner collapsed before reaching the 17-mile mark. Earl K. Seyford, 56, of Olney, Md., was airlifted to Washington Hospital Center and died Sunday of what appeared to be a heart attack, police said.
