The two ships that will carry about 3,000 Camp Lejeune Marines and sailors to the Persian Gulf region were activated Friday, according to a spokesman with the U.S. Navy's Military Sealift Command.

The 946-foot ships - USNS Denebola and USNS Regulus - are fast sealift ships used for the rapid deployment of U.S. military equipment.

Friday, convoys of military vehicles continued to roll into Wilmington, where they are waiting to embark on the ships. The Marines and sailors are with the 2nd Marine Division.
