Coleman to pin on third star

Times staff

The Marine Corps’ deputy commandant for manpower and reserve affairs will become only the second black Marine to wear three stars when he is promoted to lieutenant general this afternoon at Quantico, Va., according to a Marine Corps release.

Maj. Gen. Ronald Coleman spent only five months as a two-star. He served in the Navy during Vietnam and received his commission as a Marine second lieutenant in 1973. He has been a general officer since pinning on his first star in November 2002.

Coleman served as the director of the Corps’ Personnel Management Division until he was assigned to his current position on Sept. 29, according to the release.

Retired Lt. Gen. Frank Petersen, the first black Marine officer to reach the general ranks, will be on hand to pin on Coleman’s third star, the release said.
