Congress has passed the FY 2007 Military Authorization Act, and President Bush signed the act into law on October 17, 2006.

There were two versions of the act being considered. The House version called for an across-the-board 2.7 percent pay raise, and the Senate version called for a 2.2 percent pay increase. The Senate version won out.
The act also calls for a separate, "targeted" raise of up to 8.3 percent, for some Warrant Officers and mid-level enlisted members, effective on April 1, 2007.
Under previous law, time-in-service raises, known as "longivity raises," stopped when one reached 26 years of service. The new law establishes time-in-service raises for senior enlisted, senior warrant officers and senior commissioned officers who have between 28 and 40 years of service.
The 2.2 percent raise and longivity rates are effective on January 1, 2007, which means that military members will see it in their January 15 paychecks. . The below chart shows the FY 2007 Basic Pay rates. Military Basic Pay is based on rank (paygrade) and time-in-service.

AS we all know crap rolls down hill. Check out the disabled vets and those that gave their all. The senate and congress want to give a lump sum for the disabled, don't get me started.

Vote the bums out in 07 and 08. Some gave all,all gave some.

The VA:thumbdown and Defense Department just suck the old wazooooooooooooo!

Doesn't matter when you signed. When you report to boot camp you will get the current pay.

Still doesn't seem like much for risking your life on a daily basis, glade service was never about the money.

Do you think the congressmen (either party) would be happy with a 2.2% raise?

Just to clarify, I'm 99% sure this is it. But those numbers above are MONTHLY pay , correct? Definitely not bi-monthly pay.....

Correct.

My - how things change.
Seems to me - the current monthly pay for an E-1 was what "our yearly pay" was in 1967!!!
And - if you were unlucky enough to "bite the bullet" - the death benefit was a whopping #10G's!!
40 years ago - gas was a quarter a gallon!!
A new Chevy Chevelle was around $3800 dollars - now its $18,000.

One thing hasn't changed - Marines are still a crazy bunch!!!

Im having a little prob reading this chart. Do i have this right.... when you sign on you make 1203.90 a month and then after four months you move up to 1301.40. is that right? that means that when you sign on you make 14,446 a year and after four mounths you mave up to 15616 a year?

Echo_Four_Bravo
10-26-06, 04:48 PM
That sounds about right. Of course, you should be getting promoted to PFC pretty quickly. And, a PFC makes $1458.90 a month. But, to figure your yearly compensation you also have to factor in things like the amount they claim your barracks room is worth, the medical coverage, etc. You'll get a sheet at the end of the year that shows what they consider your actual compensation to be... and it will be much higher than you thought it would be.

Remember that this chart only shows BASIC pay. It does not show allowances that you may be entitled to such as BAQ if you are married and live off base, or combat pay, sea pay etc... There are many things that can change your pay. You may not get any of them, or you will get some of them at some point in your career...

You also have to remember that you get free medical and dental care, reduced commissary prices, housing etc... That all has added value that isn't always shown in dollars and cents in your wallet/pocketbook...

You have the RIGHT attidtude. It's not about the money, its about the pride and honor of being a Marine. Remember - Never given, always earned!

Don't worry about the money. Like Camper51 said, you have a lot of other financial benefits.

I would recommend you read "The Richest Man in Babylon". It's a small paperback book and an easy read filled with financial wisdom.

Its not about the money, just like someone said in another forum, "if you join the the Marines for financial gain. You join the wrong branch."
Right not i make about what a E4 makes, and i am only 18 still in high school. Money is diffently not the reason why i signed up for.

Being a United States Marine is priceless, I can't believe they will actually pay me to do it.

I will make $16,171 my first year, below the national poverty line which is $17,463, that's just disgraceful - those pigs in Washington should be ashamed of themselves. But i'm not joining for the money and most of it will be disposable income, so it's all good.

anyone who has joined the Marines for a good pay check has made a big mistake and needs to get out now. this job is not for the money it is for your freedom and honor i dont like to hear about wannabes and poolees b****ing about how much money they will make you dont hear about the men and women who serve our country and have earned their titles already and put their lives on the line everyday complaining about what they are getting paid.

Listen guys; don’t worry about the money. You’ll be earning more than most people your age. You have to take in account that all your meals are FREE (granted you have to eat at the chow hall). That equates to about $7,500 a year, not mention the FREE medical and dental you receive. Ask your parents about how much medical and dental bills can be.

Like in my early my earlier post, I recommended a book called "The Richest Man in Babylon". It’s really easy ready and packed with good financial advice.

Now I recommend this book NOT so you will change you mind about the Marine Corps, but to aid you so that you don’t get into financial trouble as so many young Marines do.

Good advice, but how much money do you really have? I mean, does it seem like you're always strapped for cash as a young Marine? Do you NEED money to serve in the Corps? Like if every check I leave in my bank account, the whole thing, will I have trouble functioning without money? I mean, I won't do this, but I'm just wondering if the Corps really gives you "everything" you need....aside from female companionship (Which is the only reason I could see myself strapped for cash ;))

EXCUSE ME!

Those Pigs you speak of decide your salary, and they happen to take in the fact that you will get FREE MEALS 3X A DAY, FREE ROOM AND BOARD, FREE UTILITIES, FREE MEDICAL SERVICES, FREE DENTAL SERVICES, ETC...

Don't you think that those costs aren't factored in, Accord? I believe that brings your salary up to well above the poverty level of people who must take their salary and purchase all of the above said necessities.

You need to take your head out of your anal cavity and begin to think before you go jamming your foot down your pie hole.

I may not agree with many of our politicians, but I can almost guarantee you that you will be far better paid for your services as a Marine than I was 38 years ago when buying any car on 103.00 a month was about impossible even with all those bennies. The salaries today are much more in line with the civilian sector than they were in 1968...

You know you can be "strapped" for cash no matter what occupation you have. During your tour in the Marine Corps, you will have PLENTY of money for all the things you NEED.

Now on the other hand as we go through life there are a lot of things that we WANT. All you have to do is distinguish between the two. When I was a young Marine there were times when I was broke, but I never went hungry, always had a place to sleep, and had clothes on my back. One thing that I was really adamant about was paying my bills and paying them on time.

These are good concerns you have most people jump into the unknown blindly with no contingency plan.

Best thing I ever did was join the Marines. Even when I was getting 70 bucks or so a month. Never went hungry, got medical care, was told what to do, had dental care, a place to sleep (sometimes with canvas and sometimes with the stars), got a haircut on payday, uniforms out of the cleaners, a trip to the club, cartoon of cigerattes and was good to go for one more payday.

11-01-06, 08:04 PM
If you retire with 20 or more. I pay 120.00 a month for family insurance including dental with tricare. Not cheap, not free, but far better than most civilians are paying, espically after they retire. I know because I retired from teaching too, and their medical was much more expensive for me. So I choose the military health plans. And, if you live close to a military facility and space is available its all free. Plus prescriptions cost me 3.00 for generic and 9.00 for name brand. You cant beat it.
