I just heard the battalion or regimental commander of the 2nd Marines has put a hold on granting discharged Marines permission to go home because so many are getting out right now.
This might be...

UPDATE:
It has nothing to do with regular enlistments being completed. Congratulations to all who did their duty and are moving on. That's a good part of the life cycle.
Last Sunday I was talking to a WWII Marine Veteran of Wake Island and Guadalcanal (WIA), Corporal Pasquale Forte.

He said when the war was over, his Gunner (WO) promised him that if he'd stay in they'd make him a sergeant. He told me he couldn't take it anymore and got out just like everybody else was doing.

He questioned me how come they didn't make him a sergeant in Wake Island or Guadalcanal ?

Good question, why Wake Island and Guadalcanal.
I was just speaking to the 'theme' of kentmitchell's thread: "I just heard the battalion or regimental commander of the 2nd Marines has put a hold...

What I meant by "Wake Island AND Guadalcanal ???" was that the Marines on Wake Island were all killed or ended-up as POW's for the duration of WWII, and could not have fought on Guadalcanal...???

I'm going to shoot from the hip and check afterward and get back to you. If my memory serves me right they beat off the Jap (oops! MSO http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/tsmileys2/27.gif ) attack.

http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/tsmileys2/28.gif you know your history. The guy is 83 years old and sounds like a sincere old gentleman, all he actually said to me about Wake, was as a Marine he helped the CeeBee's dig in, nothing actually about fighting there (I assumed the latter), but he did tell me he was wounded in Guadalcanal in the leg. Next time I see him at the Park District where my daughter works, I'll ask him more about Wake. Possibly he left before they were all killed or captured ? In any case I'm not going to jump him if he is pulling my leg. I'll remember to get back to you when I find out.

Good history lesson, thanks skiff !

It did cross my mind http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/tsmileys2/06.gif for a second that your questioning Wake and Guadalcanal something was amiss ! http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/tsmileys2/33.gif

I see now. Your first post had me hitting the news to find any cross reference. I've never known any unit to be lickity-split on separating admin discharges.
A interesting note about Wake Island...
