STUTTGART, Germany – Marine Corps Gen. James Jones was sworn in Thursday as the new head of the U.S. military's European command, just as U.S. troops based in Germany flooded toward the Persian Gulf for a possible war with Iraq.

Fighter jets, attack helicopters and engineers are being moved out of Germany, a key staging post for U.S. forces deploying to the Persian Gulf region, and Jones pledged full support under his orders for that effort.

"European Command will play whatever role it must ... with regard to the situation in Iraq," he said at a ceremony attended by military and civilian dignitaries including Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz.
