MCI randomizes online courses

By John Hoellwarth

It just got harder to cheat on the Marine Corps Institute’s online exams, according to an Oct. 16 Corps message.

As of Oct. 1, all online MCI test questions were randomized.

MarAdmin message 502/06 said that randomizing the test questions “preserves the academic integrity of MCI courses and ensures Marines are fully tested on course learning objectives.”

After Marines study, they can choose to take a test online or pencil in the accompanying answer sheet and mail it back to the institute for grading. But the online exams are more attractive, especially for deployed Marines, because the scores come back much faster.

Although mailing a non-randomized paper test is still an option, the message orders that “all units will continue to transition” to Web-based testing.

“Eventually, our goal is that this is going to be the only way to take an exam,” Terry Franus, the institute’s executive director, said in August. “But that’s downrange.”
