Romney vet served with actor Lee Marvin

ROMNEY - When The Military Channel airs its documentary about the many celebrities who served in the armed forces, a Romney man will share his story as a Marine in World War II.
Robert Filkosky traveled to Washington in May to be interviewed about his experience as a rifleman who served with actor Lee Marvin in I Company, 24th Regiment of the 4th Marine Division.
The Discovery Networks program, "Celebrities in Uniform," will air Thursday at 8 p.m. on The Military Channel on digital TV.
This is the second time Filkosky filled the role of Marvin's colleague, as he appeared in the documentary "Lee Marvin: A Personal Portrait by John Boorman" on American Movie Classics in 1998.
Filkosky said that Marvin was wounded on the ninth day after the Marines landed on Saipan, when the platoon of 41 men was ambushed. Marvin required 56 stitches to close his wound, which brought his war service to an end.
Years later Filkosky met the actor in Hollywood and Filkosky moved to Los Angeles in the mid-1950s to do work in air conditioning.
Filkosky, who moved back to West Virginia in 1975, said he kept in touch with his famous friend and had talked to Marvin about four months before his death.
A member of the Mountainside Marine Corps League 1071 of Cumberland, Filkosky was wounded four times on Saipan and was grazed across the scalp with a machine gun round on Iwo Jima.
The documentary will focus on many celebrities from all wars, including Jimmy Stewart, Henry Fonda, Eddie Albert, Humphrey Bogart, Jimi Hendrix, Joe Louis, Jackie Robinson, Elvis Presley, Jack Kerouac, Steve McQueen and George C. Scott.
The film was produced by award-winner Bill Brummel, whose credits include "Rwanda - Do Scars Ever Fade," "Civil Rights Martyrs" and "Inside North Korea."
