MARINE CORPS RECRUIT DEPOT SAN DIEGO (Oct. 13, 2006) -- Four depot Marines visited Holmes Elementary School in San Diego Oct. 3, to kick off the annual “Partnership in Education Program” with the San Diego School District.

The Marines participated in three physical education classes where they led the students in daily Marine Corps exercises such as push-ups, jumping jacks and muscle stretches.

They also participated in a game of Capture-the-Flag with the students after the warm-up exercises.

“Marines are really good role models for these students,” said Katy Murphy, prep-time physical training specialist for Holmes Elementary. “They teach the children important things like teamwork and self-discipline. The students really love it when they visit.”

According to the formal agreement with SDSD, the depot is responsible for providing schools with positive role models to participate in school functions and their physical education programs.

In return, the program helps build the Marine Corps relationship with the San Diego community.

“I think it’s great that Marines volunteer their time for children,” said Cpl. Kelly A. Wright, section non-commissioned officer in charge of the Traffic Management Office. “It reflects a positive image on the Marine Corps.”

Effective Oct. 3, depot Marines will make bi-weekly visits every other Tuesday, to the SDSD schools of Holmes Elementary, Lindbergh-Schweitzer Elementary and Taft Middle School.

Service members interested in participating in the program, can call Sgt. Derrick Small, depot Public Affairs Office, at (619) 524-8724.
