Jordan's Mission takes on new project
By: Alice Felts

Ten-year old Jordan Rigney collected more than 100 boxes of Girl Scout cookies to send to his brother who was serving in Iraq. Now he has a new mission. He and his mother have adopted a Marine unit in Iraq. Jordan chose to help Matthew Cirillo, son of one of the teachers at his school, Dale Cirillo, special education teacher at C.M. Bradley, and her husband, Jim.

In the Marines since 2005, Cirillo, with the 1st Battalion, 6 Marines, Charlie Company, left for Iraq on Sept. 10. Currently located at an isolated outpost, he told his parents about things that his unit needed.

Jim Cirillo said, "We sent [Jordan' mother] a list of items, specific medical supplies that were non-prescription type things that they never have enough of. And I also sent her a list of such things as socks, batteries and phone cards, things found in care packages." Cirillo, pastor of Grace Episcopalian Church in Casanova, explained, "[The church] sent one care package with some of the things Matthew wanted, but we haven't sent one with the bandages that he wanted."
Cirillo has a comprehensive list, but some of the requests by soldiers were:

Personal medical supplies:

Koban (self-adhering wrap)

Hydrocortisone cream

Kerlix (rolls of gauze- 2", 3", 4")

Athletes foot cream and powder

Naproxin

Sudafed

Loratidine (Claritin)

Miscellaneous items not requested, but to be considered:

Batteries (AA and C)

White mid-calf socks (long enough to go above the tops of combat boots)

Music CDs (new or old)

Paperback books (new or old)

Magazines (new or old)

Plastic-coated playing cards

Crosswords and other puzzle books

Liquid hand sanitizer

Fly swatters or fly paper

Items will be collected by Jordan's mother at (540) 347-7764 or by Cirillo's father at (540) 788-4419. The collection is an ongoing endeavor for Cirillo's unit.

Last year, Jordan started his philanthropic project, Jason's Mission, by collecting donations of Girl Scout cookies for his brother, Louis "Willie' Holgate. Serving in the Army in Iraq, Holgate, with the 101st Airborne, 1st Brigade, 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry, had written home for the sweets. The cookie donation served six companies of soldiers.

Holgate said, "When the cookies arrived, it made everyone's day. You could tell that the whole base was different. It made everybody feel like somebody back here cares."

Little brother Jordan said, looking back on his first project, "I wanted to help Willie's unit." And that is what Jason's Mission is all about, helping active duty soldiers and veterans. He and his mother are continually looking for projects and have established a fund for donations to finance new projects. If interested in helping with these projects, monetary donations may be made to "Jason's Mission" at any branch of The Fauquier Bank.
