A 22-year-old Camp Lejeune Marine died early Monday during a card game at a residence in the Aragona Village subdivision off Piney Green Road.
The Marine, whose name isn't being released until next of kin are notified, was found lying between the bathtub and commode at 104 Broadleaf Drive, said Onslow County Sheriff Ed Brown.
An autopsy was done Monday and the cause of the Marine's death is still unknown. The death is considered to be caused by something "other than natural causes," Brown said.
"There were no visible signs of blunt trauma that contributed to his death," Brown said.
The Sheriff's Department was contacted at about 12:34 a.m. Monday in reference to the death. The Marine, who was attached to Combat Logistics Battalion, didn't live at the house but his girlfriend did, Brown said based on information provided to law enforcement.
"Upon arrival, deputies were approached by six witnesses," Brown said. "According to the witnesses, they were playing cards when the deceased came over. Witnesses said the deceased began drinking rum and coke immediately."
Witnesses told law enforcement that the Marine allegedly drank about a liter of rum, Brown said.
"Witnesses said the deceased made several trips to the restroom so they did not pay attention to his absence," Brown said. "It was not until one of the witnesses went to the restroom that the deceased was discovered."
An autopsy was performed at 9 a.m. Monday, and toxicology tests were done. Authorities won't know the cause of death until it receives the results of those tests, which were sent to the state lab and could take a few weeks.
