If you could own only one firearm, what would it be?

I hate to ignore my handguns, but I'd have to go with a 12 guage pump shotgun. The sound of a bolt slamming home on a 12 guage pump is probably one of the more intimidating sounds on earth. If you're close enough to hear it, you're close enough to have your head blown off.

Any thougths?

Yeah. Ok. Fine. A shotgun makes absolute sense for home protection when you live in a bad neighborhood.

If you start with the shotgun, you can get anything else! Gotta agree, in country a shotgun is the only choice if you can only have one weapon. Very little can go wrong with one and it is TOTALLY convincing in a bad situation. Crate is absolutely correct in the sound of that bolt slamming home-it evinces only one thought on the part of the person hearing it "Oh ****!!!".

I would go with the Remington 870 shotgun and it's barrel options.
With the 20" sighted barrel I would have home protection and a deer gun.
With the 26" barrel I would have a good upland bird gun.
With the 30" barrel I would have a turkey and waterfowl gun.
Add a stockpile of 7 1/2 to 00 shot and some slugs and I've got it all covered with one gun.

I carried a Winne(Winchester) '97 in the paddies, loaded w/ 2 #4 buck(24 .22 cal pellets), then slug, 2 #4, slug, 2 #4. It work in the paddies and it will work here :evilgrin: :thumbup:

I have my share of guns, I'm partial to the M1-A.

But if it came down to one gun, the 20 gauge shotgun is one of the best-kept home defense secrets. Its light recoil is less likely to make a petite or inexperienced shooter flinch and miss, but 5/8ths of an ounce of lead per shot will get the job done. The standard 20 gauge buckshot load is #3, which throws 20 .25 caliber lead balls. The 12 gauge analog would be the "urban load," #4 buckshot, which launches 27 .23 caliber pellets at about the same velocity. Only the coroner is likely to be able to tell the difference.

I agree that the shotgun is a great weapon, it can be bulky for home defense. My personal favorite, and the one weapon I would own would be my Dan Wesson .445 SuperMag. I have four barrel options with a 4", 6", 7.5" and 10". It can use both the .445 SuperMag rounds, as well as the standard .44 rounds. Granted it's a revolver, but it'll drop anything from a man to a moose. Yea, the snap of a shotgun is impressive, but the sight of a hand cannon gets someone's attention quickly, too. ;)

In the 1880's, the U.S. Army commisioned the manufacture of 200 Gatling guns that were 1.00 cal. ( A one-inch dia. slug!) Cyclic rate- approx. 700 rpm.

Great weapon for intimidation factor and close quarters, but reminds me of a story related to me by a Beirut vet regarding the SgtMaj from 1/8 who was riding around outside in a jeep moving from position to position checking his Marines, toting a shotgun. Cool weapon, but highly impractical when all your targets are a minimum of a hundred meters away. This led to the Marines at one OP making a cardboard sign reading "Wabbit Season! [crossout] Duck Season!" and affixing it to the OP.

The Gatling gun John Wayne and Katherine Hepburn had on that raft in the movie, "Rooster Cogburn" must have been a replica, if not the real thing. They even knocked small trees over with it. (Movie effects?)

Awsome weapon, but not too practical come time to shoot something for chow. It would probably produce approximately the same effect as when I was in high school, fired both barrels of a double 12 from the hip, and caught a pheasant rooster about three feet in front of the muzzles. The pheasant basically disintegrated. A buddy of mine who was with me made smart alec comments about my pheasant hunting right up the the day he died of lung cancer at age 52.

crate78- Yeah, Rooster Cogburn was cool. The "standard" Gatling was 45/70 ammo. A few were .50 cal. And yes, in fact the Army used to invite the Native Americans of the 1870's to Ft. Laramie to give them blankets, axes, knives, kettles, etc. Oh, and they would demonstrate the "superior firepower" of the Gatling, by cutting down trees with them. And then warning our red brethren to 'BEHAVE'!!!

If I could only have ONE gun, it would have to be a 12-ga shotgun since it can fire different types of shot for different targets. It can defend you, attack for you, and put different kinds of chow on the table for you. You could even change barrels (and chokes) to make the ammo loads more effective.

I'd take a Remington 870 pump (as simple and reliable as a shotgun gets when loaded with more than two rounds), preferably with an extended magazine tube, a polycarb pistol grip stock (such as a Choate brand), and a Sure-Fire light equipped foregrip. A ghost ring sight would be good too. And a three-point sling system.

Heard years ago that the best survival rifle was a .22 rifle. It was big enough weapon to hunt game, ammo plentiful and you could still kill with it to get someone else's weapon.

OH ya, a drilling would be nice but my pockets have never been deep enought to do anything but dream of owning one---lol. The problem for me would be the one shot limit for defence. So I'll just stick with my first choice of an 870 remington.

I enjoyed seeing the drilling brought up! I find the old ideas of firearm design interesting. :thumbup:

Magnum Research, Mark XIX Desert Eagle .50 in the titanium carbon nitride finish. It is the most beautiful and most intimidating handgun in the world. The rechambering takes a day and a half, but the kaboom is worth it.

I use to own so many shotgun's, rifles, pistol's, it's hard to name them all. I have to agree that a good sawed off 18-1/2" 20g is a hairy sound. I'm not allowed to own a firearm of anykind because of under the table law enacted via, Clinton, thru the ATF/FBI, that over 20,000 Disabled Veterans names were given to these "Watcher's" which is now a Federal Law. One word....."Incompetent"....however, it's for VA purposes only, financial. No I'm no where close to being incompetent as the FBone says I am. Therefore I can't have a firearm, shell, or with anyone who does have on them. I don't care, saves money on ammo. SF Now carry on you wonderful gun slinger's.

Hard to say, lots of Choices :-)

I have two at home, a modified .45, and a Lee Enfield .303

Push came to shove, I'd take the .45. Modified so it packs a bit more range, but capable of putting a hole through you the size of a watermelon. Reliable as hell, and has never jammed on me.
I've only ever pulled it out of the holster with intent to kill, twice. Luckily the offenders identified themselves very quickly.
Then again, my house says "A gun lives here" :-)

Funny story. On my way home from the range, got pulled for speeding, .45 on the passenger seat, no clip in, but 4 fully loaded clips attached to the holster. Identify myself, inform officer of weapon. Hand weapon in holster to officer. He id's me, checks paperwork, tells me to slow down and hands me back the weapon.
"Why do you need 4 clips?" he asks, "Planning on going to war?"
"How many do *you* carry?" I ask.
"Good point, have a nice day sir"

Still laugh about that :-)

The .303 is handy if you want to range out to about 2000 yards. If you can see it, you can kill it. Heavy SOB though.......
