Scholarships given in memory of Marine Nick Erdy

Two scholarships, given in memory of Marine Lance Corporal Nicholas Brandon Erdy, were awarded recently.

Erdy, a 2002 Archbishop McNicholas High School graduate, was killed in Iraq on May 11.

The first recipients of the Nick Erdy Scholarships are Alexander Schreiner, son of Larry and Debbie Schreiner of Tate Township; and Joey Zerhusen, son of Joe and Mary Frances Zerhusen of Batavia Township.

Schreiner, a 2006 McNicholas graduate received a $2,000 scholarship available to a graduating senior entering the military service. He has entered the U.S. Army. His award money will be held until the completion of his service obligation.

Schreiner was a McNicholas athlete (wrestling) from Clermont County who demonstrates Christian attitude and leadership. He completed an essay on the topic, "What Serving Your Country Means to You." His father served in the U.S. Marines in Vietnam.

Zerhusen, a senior, received a $1,500 scholarship available to a current McNicholas student. Zerhusen is a current McNicholas athlete (football) who demonstrates Christian attitude and leadership and provides community service.

Erdy, son of William and Jane Erdy of Owensville, was killed in Ubaydi, Iraq, when an explosive device detonated near his armored transport vehicle. He joined the Marines following high school.

The scholarship funds are generated through the Nick Erdy Foundation, created by the Erdy family.
