News Advisory:

One of the country's most historic American flags, raised atop Mount Suribachi at Iwo Jima during World War II, will be placed in the new National Museum of the Marine Corps in time for the museum's dedication. Encased behind an etched glass image of Joe Rosenthal's famous Pulitzer Prize winning photograph, the second flag to be raised on Feb. 23, 1945, will go on display for the American public in the newest national museum in the Washington, D.C. area.

The museum, its own design inspired by the image of Marines raising the American flag at Iwo Jima, has both original American flags raised on Mount Suribachi in its permanent collection and will display them in rotation.

In conjunction with the Marine Corps' Birthday and Veterans' Day, the National Museum of the Marine Corps's Dedication will take place on Friday, Nov. 10, at 2 p.m. with some 15,000 invited guests including VIPs, Marine delegations from 50 states, and the President of the United States. The museum, open to the public on Monday, Nov. 13, will include 1,000 artifacts including tanks, aircraft, small arms, uniforms and over 1,800 photographs, letters and illustrations. Immersion and interactive experiences will allow guests to travel along the frozen TokTong pass in Korea amidst enemy troops, disembark a helicopter into the combat zone atop Hill 881 South in Vietnam and experience American history through the eyes Marines.
