well, I DID IT!....i can now say i am a U.S. Marine. there is no better feeling in the world. i graduated Charlie Company PLT 1019 (honor platoon),
poolees- ask questions, ask questions, ask questions.... the biggest advice i can give is to learn as much of the knowledge as you can before you go. ex...... rank structure, chain of command (as much as you can), USMC history, customs and courtesies..... ask your recruiter about it, they will tell u what to study. other than that, just make sure u can pass an IST, as long as you can pass that, the DI's will take care of the rest. (poosie-poo), ill let u find out what that is.
just go in with a clear head, and know that the DI's are hard because they are training warriors for war, if they fail to train you correctly, it could mean your life in battle. its that simple. and remember everything in recruit training has a reason, everything you do is preparing you for something else. so when they have you do something that seems stupid or pointless, just do what they say and it will all make sense in the end.
I also wanted to say thank you to the ladies and gentleman that gave me advice before i left. because of you i felt ready and confident to start training. nobody helped me more than you, not even my recruiter. So if ur a poolee and ur reading this.....start asking questions.... thanks everybody

Ok, The first question. As far as Marine Corps History goes, what should we try and learn while at home. I know theres alot of ti and I have a little less then a month before leave andI want to have an idea on the major points of The History. (Not saying that everything in the Marine Corps is not major) Just the Stem of the history I guess. Like the Basics.

P.S Sorry for the confusion, Thanks for the Advice

jmikejr.....here are some of the things u need to know as far as USMC history.......
-the first Marine to earn the medal of honor
-the two Marines who each earned 2 medals of honor
-the father of USMC aviation
-the first woman Marine
-the year women could join the Marines
-read about John Basilone, and what he did during WWII
-how the battle for Hue City was fought
-the most decorated Marine
-the date the Marine barracks in lebanon was bombed
-the definition of "deadly force", (in boot camp it was defined as: force that will cause death of serious bodily harm used as a last resort)

Those are the questions i remember the most, you will take the test alot before you take the one that counts on T-63. it was just nice knowing some of the knowledge and not having to worry about learning a bunch of stuff. you have plenty of other stuff to worry about. :)
also try to learn your general orders. even though it doesnt seem like it, the drill instructors do notice the recruits that took the initiative to get to boot camp as prepared as possible. let me know if u have any other questions, i should be able to help u out.

Also:
-The year Marine Corps Aviation began(1912)
-The first amphibious assault in Marine Corps History(New Providence, Bahamas)
-The first amphibious landing to use....something...can't remember the name, but it was Guadalcanal
-The amphibious landing that was opposed by the DOD(Inchon)
-The battle in WWII that was fought to provide landing strips for strategic bombers(Iwo Jima)
-The battle in WWII that proved the need for more Landing Vehicles, Tracked(LVTs)(Tarawa)
-The battle in Vietnam where the Marines were under a 77 day seige(Khe Sahn)
-The first contact with Iraqi forces in Desert Storm(Al Khafji)
-The operation where Marines detained Manuel Noriega(Operation Just Cause)
-The operation where Marines evacuated American medical students from Grenada(Operation Urgent Fury)
-The operation where Marines went to Somalia(Operation United Shield)
-The significance of the French Forage(given to Marines for their actions at Belleau Wood, Blanc Mont, and Soissons)
-The significance of the Quatrefoil(cross shaped braid worn by Marines so that they could be distinguised by Marine sharpshooters, now worn by all officers)
-The origin of the term Devil Dog(given to Marines by the Germans at the Battle of Belleau Wood, in WWI)
-The origin of the term Leatherneck(given to Marines because they wore leather collars from 1775 to 1875)
-The origin of the phrase, First to Fight(from a WWI recruiting poster)
-The significance of the Blood Stripe(worn by all NCOs, SNCOs, and Officers for actions at Chapultapec)

There's more, but that's all I can think of. Also, the 171 question test is big on UCMJ, and First Aid, so you'd do yourself a favor if you learned that stuff. I think the SSgt has a thread around here that has 171 question test questions on it..if you can answer all those, you're good.

Congratulations Marine!

Now for the questions....
Do we need to know basically everything in the Marine Guidebook of Essential Subjects? For example Code of Conduct. Will we have to recite it word for word or do we just need to know the basic idea of each article.

CONGRATULATIONS!

Question:

1 - What did SAW training involve?

2 - How did you make out on the swim qualifications?

SAW training invloved a class on the parts and functions of the m249, a test on different specifications, and then we all got to fire something like 30 rounds down range. swim qual came easy to me. i got 2nd class on my first try. it wasnt as easy for everyone else, most got aleast 3rd class, but everyone passed 4th. my IST when i got there was 3 pull-ups, 11:10 1.5 mile, and 84 crunches, when i took the final pft i did 10 pull ups, 19:10 3 mile, and 117 crunches.

Yes you will need to be familiar with those subjects and you will be expected to memorize the code of conduct word for word...as well as the riflemans creed, general orders, etc...
