GI Bill benefits to rise Oct. 1

By Rick Maze

GI Bill educational benefits will rise by 4 percent on Oct. 1 — a jump that sounds better that it is.

After the increase, the maximum payment for full-time students will be $1, 075 for those with three or more years of active duty. The rate for fulltime students who are reservists who have not been mobilized for a year or longer singe Sept. 11, 2001, will be $309 a month.

The new rates are effective on Oct. 1 and will first appear in November checks.

The 4 percent increase, the result of automatic indexing put into law years ago by Congress, is enough to keep pace with inflation, but college costs have been rising faster than inflation.

The College Board reports tuition has increased by 5.9 percent at four-year private colleges and university and by 7.1 percent at four-year public colleges and universities in the past year.
