Vet without legs robbed, beaten to death

HOUSTON -- A Vietnam veteran who had lost both of his legs fighting in Vietnam died after being beaten during a brutal robbery, police said.
Authorities said 57-year-old Barney Goodman had been beaten and left for dead by robbers who wanted his $1,800 monthly veteran's disability payment.
The Baytown resident died this weekend at a Houston hospital after a passing motorist discovered him trying to claw his way out of a creek in Liberty County, northeast of Houston.
Liberty County Sheriff Greg Arthur called the crime "unusually cruel."
Goodman's brother, Richard Ford, said Goodman was badly beaten and not wearing his prosthetic legs when he was found. Ford, a veteran of the Houston Fire Department, searched the area Saturday for evidence of the attackers.
"You can see on the edge of the riverbank how it was all worn down, because he was trying to crawl up it," Ford said.
Ford said Monday that family members were unsure of the cause of death. An autopsy was pending.
Goodman was conscious when he was found. He told police he was attacked by two men in a primer-gray pickup and then thrown in the creek.
Arthur said Monday that police still were interviewing hospital employees who treated Goodman.
This is so disgusting, it sickens me that there are people who in this country who do such things, I don't know what much more to say other than I just wish that my Sig P229 DAK and I could have been there to do something to prevent this. Anyone who commits a crime against a veteran should be charged with treason and immediately put to death by way of firing squad or public hanging, leave it up to the family to decide which method they prefer. Lethal injection is far too humane. Our criminal justice system is not sufficient for dealing with these truly heinous of crimes.
