NEW YORK (9/15/2006) -- The 1st Marine Corps District color guard stepped out onto the stage to the roar of what seemed like millions during the World Wrestling Entertainment’s Monday Night Raw at Madison Square Garden on Sept 11.

The Marines were asked to be there as part of the event’s opening ceremonies which honored the victims of Sept. 11. With this year marking the fifth anniversary of the tragic day, a moment of silence came over the reputedly rowdy horde of New York WWE fans as they remembered the events that changed the face of their city.

Following the moment of silence, ring announcer Lilian Garcia opened the show with her rendition of "America the Beautiful," as a mammoth monitor behind the Marines displayed images of inspiration and patriotism.

“It was and absolute adrenaline rush. You could feel the power coming from the audience as they chanted, ‘U-S-A, U-S- A!’ It was an honor to be there, representing Marines and our armed forces,” said Sgt. Michael Carpenter, a long time wrestling fan.

The event also marked the last RAW performance by wrestling star John Cena. Cena will be making his silver screen debut as a Marine in his new feature, “The Marine.” When asked about his character, he said, “he’s a certified bad-ass.”
