SAN DIEGO ---- Noting that he was "gratified beyond words," Vista resident Bob Farner said Friday that his wait of 60 years to receive two Purple Heart medals proved worthwhile in the end.

"I appreciate it more now than I would have if I'd gotten them right at first," Farner said following a formal awards tribute at the San Diego Marine Corps Recruit Depot.

"A lot of people showed up and it was quite a big ceremony," Farner said after exchanging handshakes with many of nearly 200 people who witnessed him receiving long-deserved medals for wounds suffered during World War II.

Farner, 79, was awarded one Purple Heart medal for enduring shrapnel wounds in May 1942 on the Philippine island of Corregidor and another for suffering two broken arms inflicted by Japanese army prison guards several months later.
