"I was telling myself that he wasn't going to go," said Linda Villegas, 20, who sobbed as her husband hugged her goodbye.
The possibility of war with Iraq, and the likelihood that thousands of men and women from North Carolina's military bases will have to fight, has become harder to deny. Soldiers from Fort Bragg, fighter pilots from Seymour Johnson Air Force base, a Morrisville-based unit of the N.C. National Guard and 7,000 Marines from Camp Lejeune got deployment orders late last week. Just hours after Pentagon officials disclosed on Friday that Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld had ordered nearly 35,000 troops, including two large Marine units, to ship out for a possible war with Iraq, Rumsfeld signed another order to deploy 27,000 more people. Most are from Army and Air Force combat units.
