The Marine Corps as a whole as always been an elite fighting unit. Do you think the Marine Corps should have created the "Marine Corps Special Operations Command Detachment"?

You can read more about this unit here: http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/northcounty/20021219-9999_1mi19specops.html

I voted no only for this reason. The Marine Corp itself is an elite fighting force! is force recon not an elite force? is division recon not an elite force? are the S.T.A plts out in division not elite?

I think the Eagle, Anchor and Globe already says elite.

I believe that a new MOS would be enough.

... but H@LL NO !!!

Greensideout said it....

A new MOS should be enough.

To say that 1 group is "ELITE", also says that the rest 'ain't'. Not real 'PC' of them now was it. :devious:

Granted, some Marines are more trained in specific areas, than others, but that's what MOS's are for. Just 'cause I can load and fire an M60, didn't make me an 0331. You can drop a round down a tube, but your not an 0341 (my MOS).

Suddenly I feel degraded...

The answer is NO!
As it has been said before, MOS's are the way to go. are elite. After all the Marine Corps is elite.

when i was in nam our all wise in office stoped the rotation prosses....it wasnt long before we was a 15 man plt..that being everyone....we had men with recon mos with us...the we had volintears from the rear ...some from guns some from the mess hall....ya get the pic.....they all became 0311

all are Marines. back then they was talking a baret for 0311s only...i think they where talking black....the idea was rejeckted because all marines are rifalmen first any mos other then that was secondary....a marine is a marine

be safe Marines

I have to agree with green. If you're in the got Eagle, Anchor and Globe, then you are part of the elite few. The title 'elite' just comes with the territory.

No fu cking way. This in my opinion, is another way to appease some inset desire to achieve a 'status' like some other military branches of service. (someone beat me but: ie, 101st airborne, 3rd Army, Seals - least I have respect for them, and so on)

The reality IS: we already have. Some politician's idea, that never had a uniform on in the first place........ any bets???

PC, PC,...

You have to realize that the left over Clintonistzas still have jobs and need to justify them!

However, this PC stuff needs to stop.

WITF do we (the Proud and have already served) [Man I need a Acronym for that one] have a vested interest in what is going on.

Let me see, how many rounds do I have here at the house that need to be expended. (fire for effect).

Don't we already have Force Recon & S.O.C. units? What ever happened to F.A.S.T. Company?

I was a winger after I went to almost a year of school, but I'm a Marine rifleman since the day I graduated boot camp.

Perhaps a new M.O.S. is necessary, but I think we already have units that could be considered "elite."

Some radom thoughts from an old jarhead..."elite" as in Raiders of WWII fame.
Then Force Recon out of the Recon Bn's.
All those were just an MOS, but they went by the title.
Doing this, we set some Marines above others.
Sure way to set in resentiment among the troops.
We're "Riflemen" first, everything else is a luxury or secondary.
I would vote NO, for all the reasons stated above.
I too question;
"What became of F.A.S.T Companies?"
Now another thought came to mind;
Won't all these "Elite Units" fight to cover the same ground, there will be an overlapping of missions.
IMHO after much thought on this subject.
I carried several secondary MOS's beside my 0311

While on active duty I spent a lot of time on Army bases. I hated all their uniform differences with their little ge gaws and trim pieces.Creating a special elite unit designation would just be a way of dividing not enhancing the Corp. No Never!

I agree with Millrat on the resentment although I served in a recon co. and a S.T.A. plt. I served in a line co. first as a marine rifleman I never really resented those guys until I had met a few even after I was in these mos's I still resented a few of them that went straight there from ITR. I just always felt they didn't have to "pay thier dues" and they had the attitude that they "were better than those that came from the Grunts" Kinda like the mustang officers and the westpoint officers.

Iknow all this don't have squat to do with the poll question but thats my two cents worth

I agree with you all but I think this more about training than elitism. Additional training combined with Marine Corps attitude .

there is no time to build a "new elite force " the time for war is now. it takes time to build a unit like that, it needs to gel. unit cohesion has to have time for all differences to be worked out besides wheres the money gonna come from? elite force my ass. in desert storm the army was abandoning trucks and vehicles all over the place we would strip them just to keep ours running. they gonna rob the grunts hell they had a hard time keeping us fed the last time, keep in mind the marine corp is the smallest therefore we get the smallest paycheck, we take the scraps already then march on to whoopass. the bastard children of uncle sam.

This isn't the first time the Corps has created a unit, separate from others, to pursue specialized goals. Reference the Raider Battalion and para-Marines of WWII. The difference, I believe, is that both those organizations were established to support specific Marine Corps ops. Conversely, it's possible the Marine SOG units will assume much the same responsibilities as current Army units; if so, Marine SOG personnel could be attached to the Theater Commander (maybe an Army General or an Admiral) vice supporting only Marine combat units. If such becomes the case, I hope the Corps drops its SOG billets from the T/O, and turns them over to the Army (where they can all wear those cute little French hats).

How many times and how many men .........

I will leave this one to your own historical research boys..... cause I do my own research.

And, I kinda think the French are quite pompus fu cks to being with, let alone what I really think. Ya already know what I think of the UN, thusly - draw your own conclusion from that premise and point of reference.

Remember Belleau Wood

I rest my case.

for what its worth and maybe someone already said this and if so i appologize but i think it would take away from the unity of the corps. and could you picture marines with differant unit patches on their arms. then what would be next "a corps of one." with the mos, the corps tried that a few years ago with a recon mos 0341 think dont qoute me, and it didnt work because there was no guarantee that you could make it. after high school i want to go recon like my user name didnt give it away.:) and when people ask me why i tell them that i want to be in the elite of the elite. but that is just me

Thanks for the feedback, Future-Recon. In my years with the Corps I had the opportunity to serve with almost every type of organization in the Marines. In all cases, individual Marines considered themselves the best of the best, and were proud of the job they did in their own MOS. I was a grunt for seven years, and we always considered Recon to be grunts who got to go swimming and fall out of airplanes! I applaud your desire to be one of the best. Recon is a great bunch of Marines with a very specialized task...best of luck in getting those jump wings. Embark

Just FYI Future_Recon the MOS 0341 is actually a Mortarman (infantry).
and in my opinion (which is humble, even though I am not) EVERY Marine is the elite of the elite, some are just trained more in other areas. ( I sure thought that the admin. bubba in charge of getting me my paycheck was elite LOL)
In any case......SEMPER FI..... it's not just a motto....it's a way of life.....okay...I'm done rambling now

The Marines have always been regarded as special to those who know anything about war. We're the ones who go in when the going is rough. I always thought the Marines were the best. That's why I joined. I knew that , if I went to Vietnam ( and I did), that I wanted to go as a Marine, not a Green Beret, Navy Seal, or any other "Special Force" designation. The term Marine says it all.

I want all of you to know how much comfort it gives me to see the troops voicing opinions which I believe are the Heart of the Corps. From the day we pinned on that Eagle Globe and Anchor we all became Elite.

Long as we have someone to handle our meds, we're good to go! :D
