A Marine lance corporal at Camp Pendleton, who claimed to have been shot in the leg by gang members Thursday, admitted he shot himself in an attempt to be freed from his military obligation, authorities said.
Ricardo Villarreal, 20, of Denver first told sheriff's deputies that two men confronted him about 1:30 p.m. as he was walking to his apartment on Alturas Road in Fallbrook. Villarreal had said the men asked him about the red shirt he was wearing, and when he ignored them and kept walking, they shot him in the left calf, sheriff's Sgt. John Minardi said.
When gang investigators from the Fallbrook sheriff's station went to the hospital to question Villarreal, they realized he was lying.
