KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A local doctor who is also a Navy reservist now has a Bronze Star.

Dr. Matt Gratton spent all of last year treating Marines, sailors and Iraqi soldiers in Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was stationed in Haditha.

This week, Gratton was awarded the Bronze Star for his work as battalion surgeon with the 3rd Battalion, 25th Marines.

In all, Gratton and his team were responsible for the medical care given to 1,700 servicemen and women.

He said he got eventually grew accustomed to the danger and the bombing.

"It's pretty much like everything in that after a while, you sort of get used to it. At the camps I was at, we were rocketed and mortared quite often. After a while, you hear the explosions and think, 'Well, that missed everybody. That's OK,'" Gratton said.

Now back in Kansas City, he serves as director of emergency medical services for the Kansas City, Mo., Health Department. He's also an emergency nurse at Truman Medical Center.
