The following is an e-mail I just received from Ray Jacobs.
Ray is the radioman shown in the photos by Lou Lowery (Leatherneck magazine) who accompanied the 40-man combat patrol up Mt. Suribachi to raise our colors on 23 Feb 1945. The flag was indeed raised at about 1020 that morning. The following e-mail is from a Marine to ray who witnessed that flagraising that morning.

Note: I am referring to the First Flag On Suribachi, and not the "replacement" flag raised later that day and photographed by joe Rosenthal.

What a sight it was to behold. What an uplift
it gave to us tired and weary Marines who were
left. Yes, I seen that glorious sight of our countrie's
flag being raised on Mt. Suribachi, on Feb 23, 1945.
I was at the bottom of Suribachi, heading toward
air field #1 when I just happened to look up. We
were being {mortered} at that moment. I remember
I couldn't see for the tears of joy and unbelief in
my eyes. I will never-never forget that moment.
And the fact that so many Marines gave their lives
so our country would remain FREE.
