Duty has called the mayor of Berwyn Heights. And he's answering.
Mayor Bradley Jewitt's Marine Corps Reserve unit was called up for active duty in the war on terrorism, prompting Jewitt to resign his position as mayor, effective at the end of Wednesday night's monthly town meeting.
A Town Council member will be elevated to mayor, and the council will look to fill the resulting vacancy.
Jewitt enlisted in the Marines in 1989 and saw action in Operation Desert Storm. He's been a reservist since the fall of 2001, holding the rank of major.
