It’s been a summer of firsts for the USS Ronald Reagan. Last month, it returned from its maiden deployment, and Tuesday, it hosted its first-ever citizenship ceremony.

More than 75 Marines and Sailors were sworn in as U.S. citizens on board the ship Tuesday.

The newly naturalized troops hail from 27 different countries, including Mongolia, Nigeria and Germany. Many of them had the same inspiration when they signed up to defend their country.

“The biggest decision for me to join the military was September 11, like for many other people as well,” Sailor Frederik Waag said.

Tuesday’s ceremony also honored retired Rear Admiral Jose Luis Betancourt as an outstanding American by choice. The honor recognizes achievements of naturalized U.S. citizens.
