Manitowoc native retires after two decades in Marines

MANITOWOC — Master Sgt. Steven J. Nelson, son of Capt. Albert and Diane Nelson, Manitowoc, recently retired after 20 years with the U.S. Marine Corps.

He was recently honored during a retirement ceremony at Marine Corps Air Station, Yuma, Ariz.

Nelson was born in Manitowoc and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1986, entering a Marine Corps boot camp in San Diego on July 1 of that year.

Nelson received journalism training at Fort Harrison near Indianapolis and was deployed as a photojournalist aboard ships in the Western Pacific Ocean in 1988. He was deployed to Saudi Arabia in 1990 in Operation Desert Shield, where he wrote stories, took photographs and escorted the media on Marine Corps assignments.

He returned to Camp Pendleton in 1991 and worked in the Corps' media relations section. He was promoted to sergeant in 1991. He later served as marketing and public affairs representative at the Marine Recruiting Station in Phoenix. In 1997, he returned to shipboard deployments with the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, again in the public affairs unit.

He later returned to recruiting and public affairs in Kansas City, Mo., and in Yuma. He finished his career at public affairs chief in Yuma.

He earned Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals and a Combat Action Ribbon during his 20-year career.

Nelson resides in Glendale, Ariz., with his wife Stephanie and children — Stephen, 13, and Alexis, 5.

He is currently training to become a civilian firefighter.
