Matthew Stanley was like most students attending college at Auburn University. He did a little studying and a little more partying. From all appearances, the chemistry major was on a course for a degree and a job within his field.
"I just needed a change of pace," Stanley said.
"I thought I needed to do something different – do something important."
After some thought, he called his parents and announced his decision. He would join the Marines.
"I definitely took a left when everyone thought I was going to take a right," he said.
