In the opening days of the new year, life at Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center appears to be moving in its usual rhythm except for some down time for the holidays.
But the crescendo of war, which began with the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, is growing, and American forces are positioned in the Persian Gulf for possible military action against Iraq.
Rumors of Marines’ possible deployment are flying around this remote military town 60 miles northeast of Palm Springs. The rumors so far are unsubstantiated.
