CAMP SCHWAB, Okinawa — Marines, and a handful of wannabes, hit the beach Saturday to put a new spin on “good, clean fun:” They spent the morning cleaning up Oura Wan Beach here — then broke for a barbeque.

Aided by about five Young Marines, Marines from various Marine Corps camps on Okinawa spent an hour Saturday morning combing the beach and tree line for trash before firing up the grills.

The event was organized by the Single Marine Program to get “Marines out of their barracks and doing something in their community,” said Amanda Daniels, one of the program’s recreation specialists.

Or as participant Lance Cpl. Elizabeth Shea, 20, of Clayton, N.C., put it, “I like the Single Marine Program because it’s better for the Marines. It gives them something to do on Saturdays other than get into trouble.”
