I have read the Sticky and certify my public profile is accurate and anyone so desirous can check it out, my serial number is 633178. I also realize the name of this Thread is "Looking for a Leatherneck". I sincerely hope my request will be considered and not disallowed because of technicalities or other lawyering. I am hoping to identify the Navy Chaplain, attached to the 6th Marines during the summer of 1952, while in the Mediterranean area. It is an embarrassment that I have forgotten his name, but have always remembered the person and his words. At the closing of every gathering of us he always finished with these words, attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville:
" . . . America is great because America is good and should America cease to be good, then America shall cease to be great. . . ". At that time he was a Navy full LT (USMC Captain). With the records at your disposal it is my hope that this fine man can be identified and more properly remembered.
In closing, let me state I am well aware of the controversy concerning the above quotation, but the words are there to be found. One of several causes of the controversy is in the vast number of editions, translations and "revisions" that have developed over the succeeding years, in my opinion.
Surely I am not the last Marine or Sailor who might remember this good man.
CAS3, your public profile leads me to think you can handle this.
Kindest regards and SF, Gary Hall, Tyler, TX.
