I was stationed at Camp Schwab Okinawa in 1973 & 74. I was a radio operator for several months before going into special services. I became a lifeguard at the pool for awile and later worked the beach until my unit went on float. I stayed behind and went to supply for about 2 months, I was short and counting the days before orders back home. If you were there send out a shout I would like to hear from you.

I was at Camp Schwab from Oct 1973 to Oct 1974. I was the Admin Cheif, a Sergeant at the time, for Mike 3/9. That was my second tour in Okinawa within a 14 month time span. My office and Barracks was at the end of the road and down by the ocean. I loved that place!
I found this website a few months back. Its pics of Camp Schwab. You will be amazed of how alot of the buildings are still the same, like the swimming pool and Base Theater. Go check it out: http://www.geocities.com/Pentagon/3611/schwab.htm
Write back when you have a chance.

Ron, Great to here from a Camp Schwab fellow Marine. My barracks was across from the armory and kitty corner from the chow hall. I went to the link of Camp Schwab and you know it still looks pretty much the same. Ron, let me see if we can remember something specific that happened in 73 and 74. Do you remember the Marine that climbed the water tower down by the theater and threatened to jump. Or how about when President Nixon gave the orders to stand by for deployment to Vietnam. Boy I was nervous, we had to stay in the barracks for two days fully dressed with our M16 ready to ship out. Actually this happened twice, kind of nerving to say the least. Oh how about the Typhoons that hit the Island what a show, I remember standing in the wind and leaning forward about a foot of the ground.. what a rush. Send back a shout when you can.<O:p</O:p

Yes, I remember that incident with the Water Tower and the Marine. Man, that just seems like it was yesterday. You know, I haven't been back there since I left in Oct 1974. I loved Okinawa! I dont remember the even of Nixon preparing to order us to Nam. That may have happened when we were on a the Bravo Cruise. This was also during the Energy Crisis. We were suppose to hit some really good Ports like Tiwain, Hong Kong, Japan, but we went straight to Fuji Japan for Cold Weather Training, and due to the energy crisis, we were forced to stay at Camp Fuji for the remainder of the Cruise. It wasnt that bad though. Since we lost our other Ports of call, they gave us weekends off and at least one 96 every month. I spent alot of time in Tokyo. I use to always get a room in the Hotel New Japan. No, it wasnt one of those kind of Hotels. This one was pretty fancy. I loved Japan, as well!
Well, let me go for now. Write when you can and I will try to remember other things that happened there.

djsimpson-
I don't know how I remembered Kho Tang. Maybe it was from another post awhile back. I almost got it mixed up with Kuo te (spelling, chinese?) another term for "pot sticker". Anyway Kho Tang is an island about 40 miles from the Cambodian border.
