Noble: Jawan Davis, for saving his mother's life by remembering who to call in an emergency.

Here's a lesson for all the grownups who don't think their children listen. Jawan, a 6-year-old from Chicago, was getting ready for camp Wednesday morning when his mother Nicole Erving suddenly collapsed on the floor, reports the Chicago Sun-Times. Instead of panicking, Jawan did exactly as he had been taught: He picked up the phone and dialed 911.

"It's kind of remarkable for someone that's six years old," Calumet City Fire Chief William Galgan said. "Most kids won't even think to pick up the phone and call 911."

Even more remarkable, said the dispatcher who answered the call, is how calm Jawan remained on the other line, all the while trying to control his 3-year-old and 11-month-old siblings. "If all our callers were like him, it would make our jobs a lot easier," she said.

Jawan remained on line until the ambulance arrived to take his mother to the hospital. "It's possible he saved her life," said Mr. Galgan.

As for Jawan, a man of few words: "My mom was sick. I had to help her." Spoken like a true hero.

For knowing exactly what to do, Jawan Davis is the Noble of the week.

Knave: Sen. John Kerry, otherwise known as The Man Who Would Be Saint.

During the 2004 presidential campaign, vice presidential candidate John Edwards promised that if Mr. Kerry were elected president, people like Christopher Reeve - who had just died - would get up from their wheelchairs and walk. Now we can add this to "The Miracles of President Kerry" - a book which, sadly, won't ever be written:

"If I was president, this wouldn't have happened," Mr. Kerry said this week, referring to the ongoing Middle East crisis. So, after curing paralysis and ending war, Mr. Kerry would be just one small miracle away from sainthood, if only the American people had been a bit wiser.

And so the Middle East continues to erupt and acute spinal injuries remain a fact of life. Humanity can blame Ohio.

As for what would have been Mr. Kerry's third miracle, the editorial page is at a loss. Healing the blind? Turning water into wine (of course when he isn't walking on it)? But those have already been done. Alas, the world might never know.

So instead of St. Kerry the Healer, it's plain old John Kerry the Knave.
