For those of you who don't know who General Hawley is, he is a newly retired 4-star general who commanded Air Combat Command. These are good words and true. <br />

This really can't be happening. I had a marine friend forward the following story.

Ladies and Gentlemen..If the travesty described below does not get your
blood
to an immediate fast boil nothing will.

How anything like this can happen in America today to a man who not only
served this country in time of war but did so with such honor and
distinction
is beyond me.

As we now find ourselves sitting on the brink of yet another war where
American men and women, young and not so young will be risking their lives
to
preserve the freedoms that LTC Roger Dent served to protect, we must make it
a point of honor to rectify what has happened to him and no doubt countless
others and see to it that it never is allowed to happen again.* America
should still stand for something...The promises that we make as a country to
those who serve in our military must be kept...

PLEASE consider taking an active role here by alerting your friends and all
patriotic Americans that this has in fact happened and that it can happen to
any one of us.

Send copies of this Email to your local newspapers and other media outlets.

"Screaming Eagle"...By Rich Carroll
Copyright December 31, 2002

Every story has a beginning, a middle, and an end.* Ours begins in the
middle, in Vietnam, during ten days of hell on Earth at a place designated
"Hill 937" on U.S. Army aerial maps, but known to millions as "Hamburger
Hill". From May 10-20, 1969, Hamburger Hill was the scene of blistering
battle between US elements of the 101st "Screaming Eagles" and the North
Vietnamese Army.* During one 72 hour period, the artillery group commanded
by
a young Army Captain named Roger Dent fired seven thousand five hundred
155mm
shells at an entrenched, veteran and desperate enemy.* Ten straight days of
brutal fighting before our forces "took" Hamburger Hill.
Captain Dent would spend 24 months fighting in Vietnam.* Among his combat
medals are four Bronze Stars with "V" device and 11 air medals.* Roger Dent
would spend many years both on active duty and reserves, being recalled for
extended active duty many times for the United States Army, both as an
enlisted soldier and a commissioned artillery officer.
In the beginning, Roger was born in England and a citizen of the United
Kingdom.* As the war in Vietnam expanded, the U.S. Army needed troops.*
Roger
Dent answered our nation's call and volunteered to fight in Vietnam as a non
U.S. citizen with a British passport.* He would receive his U.S. citizenship
during the middle of, and the after action fighting of Hamburger Hill at a
ceremony in Hawaii after four years of serving with our military, but was
quickly whisked back to Vietnam because his services were desperately
needed,
being told "don't worry, you are a U.S. citizen and will receive official
documents, and it will be noted on your military DD214".
Our story ends today, 33 years after Roger Dent fought valiantly at
Hamburger
Hill.* The Social Security Administration needs his certificate of
Naturalization, a document that seems IMPOSSIBLE to obtain from the
Immigration and Naturalization Service.* His trips to the INS in Washington,
DC and Charlotte, NC have been exercises in frustration.* His letters to
Senators and Congressmen and the President have fallen on deaf ears.
Roger Dent fought, was wounded, and decorated for valor for the United
States
of America.* Like our founding fathers, he came to this country to risk his
life, lead men into battle and endure great personal hardships and
sacrifices
because he believed in America.* Since his combat days in the jungles of
Vietnam and a total of 20+ years in the service to our country Roger has
been
a productive "citizen", maxing-out his Social Security contributions year
after year, yet he cannot "prove" he is an American citizen. He cannot draw
the benefits to which he is entitled.
To say this American Hero is bitter, frustrated and disappointed is an
understatement.* He feels he wasted a lifetime, wants the Social Security to
give him back all the money they have taken from him, if they will not let
him participate in the benefits and he will leave this country he loves as
his own. A gallant United States Army officer feels betrayed.
Within our system of "justice for all", there must be someone who can give
this man his citizenship papers. Within a land that is proud to call itself
"home of the brave", there must be SOMEONE who will recognize this brave man
and help secure for him what is rightfully his.* Within a government that
seeks desperately to "not offend" non U.S. citizen groups, there must be
SOMEONE who believes in taking care of our own citizens and "do the right
thing".
When a hero of the United States Military cannot obtain his citizenship
papers while the INS processes thousands of alien Middle Eastern requests
daily, something is VERY WRONG.
