MORRIS - The U.S. Marines have come to Morris and have made a long-term commitment to the community.

The U.S. Marine Career Center opened at 321 Liberty St., just south of Jefferson Street, in May.

Staff Sgt. Keith Sandor, who previously worked in Naperville, is the recruiting officer for Morris.

Sgt. David Kasher, from Braidwood, is currently enrolled in a class, but will also be joining the Morris office.

Opening a recruiting office in Morris was based on current and future growth in the area.

"We looked at the map of the Morris area and determined this was a good time," Sandor said. "We wanted to be first and build a good relationship with the community. That is what this is all about."

He said the Marines are willing to work with any charitable group in the community.

An executive of McDonald has access to a stock car which competes in NASCAR races. He allows the Marines to use it so it was on display during the July Cruise Night.

Sgt. Sandor said it allowed the Marines to participate in a community event, at no cost.

Sgt. Sandor said the Morris recruiting office is a qualifying station for those interested in joining the corps. No one can enlist in the Marines directly through the Morris office.

Sandor explained he meets with interested men and women, provides them with information and determines their qualifications.

If the individual meets the initial qualifications, they can go to the center in DesPlaines, where they are interviewed and tested.

Those who qualify can then enlist.

Sgt. Sandor said the Morris recruiting office usually opens between 7:30 and 8 a.m. and is often open until 9 p.m. He said interested individuals can come into the office or he will meet with them at other locations.

When the area schools are in session, Sgt. Sandor said he will work with the schools to provide information to interest students.

The Marines have a recruiting office in Joliet while the office in LaSalle-Peru is combined with the Morris office.
