Help available for those in military, families

HARRISBURG – State Rep. Keith McCall, D-Carbon County, announced Tuesday that Pennsylvania’s new Military Family Relief Assistance Program is now accepting applications from eligible Pennsylvania service members and their families who have immediate financial needs as a result of their military service.

Members that are eligible are those serving: 30 or more consecutive days of active duty with the Pennsylvania Army, Air National Guard or Reserve Components of the Armed Forces; 30 ore more consecutive days of active duty with the active armed forces (Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines or Coast Guard or; 30 or more consecutive days of state active duty for emergencies or duty under the Emergency Management Assistance Compact in the Pennsylvania Army or Air National Guard.

Those that are eligible should visit the state Department of Military and Veterans Affairs’ Website at .us. Applications should be mailed to the Military Family Relief Assistance Program, c/o Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, Building P-0-47, Fort Indiantown Gap, Annville, Pa., 17003.

McCall also announced Tuesday that the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency has extended the deadline for military service members to apply for the Armed Forces Loan Forgiveness Program to June 30, 2007.

Anyone serving in the U.S. military in an active-duty status between Sept. 11, 2001 and Dec. 31, 2006, excluding two-week active-duty assignments on training status, may be eligible for financial assistance. Applicants must be current residents of Pennsylvania; a non-resident who left a Pennsylvania school due to a call to active duty; a non-resident who was living in Pennsylvania at the time of enlistment; or a non-residents who enlisted in the military immediately after attending a Pennsylvania approved institution of post-secondary education.
