Marine Corps University Foundation (MCUF), driven by the motto "Ammunition for the Mind: Giving Marines the tools to excel in the Corps and in life," is a non-profit organization that provides resources that enhance and enrich Marine Corps professional military education (PME) and leadership.

"Our main focus of effort is for the schools of the Marine Corps University (MCU)," said Programs Manager Sherry Schmid.

The schools MCU offers are the Marine Corps War College, School of Advanced Warfighting, Command and Staff College, Expeditionary Warfare School and Staff Non-commissioned Officer's Academies. The MCU provides funding for the school's six endowed chairs, battlefield studies, visiting speakers, conferences and symposiums, faculty development, student research for Master of Military Studies papers and books for the General Alfred M. Gray Marine Corps Research Center Archives and Libraries, including preservation of historic Marine Corps documents at the General Alfred M. Gray Marine Corps Research Center Archives and Libraries.

"We raise money through our individual and corporate membership programs, the Combined Federal Campaign (#2158), private grants, and fundraising events to provide for these programs," said Schmid.

MCUF has three annual fundraising events: The Semper Fidelis Award Dinner, Tyson, Va.; Major General John H. Russell Leadership Award Luncheon, New York City; and the Semper Fidelis Golf Classic, Stafford, Va. The Semper Fidelis Award Dinner held in March, recognizes a distinguished American leader whose commitment to personal and professional excellence embodies those qualities of leadership and character uniquely associated with the United States Marine Corps. Some past honorees have been Colin L. Powell, former president George H. W. Bush and Senator John McCain. The Major General John H. Russell Leadership Award Luncheon held in October honors former Marines and the Semper Fidelis Golf Classis is held in September.

Schmid believes the foundation provides a much needed service to the Marine Corps by being able to fund professional military education (PME) endeavors for which government funds are not available.

"Whether at Marine Corps University (MCU) or the operating forces and supporting establishment, professional military education is essential for the Marine Corps to continue its reputation as an elite, world-renowned fighting force," said Schmid.

According to Schmid, in 2005 the foundation provided over $1.2 million to fund military education programs which included $140, 000 provided to 171 Marine units for unit libraries and PME events through their Command Support Program.

The MCUF's Command Support Program provided the funds for Henderson Hall Marines to go on a battlefield study to Gettysburg, Pa. in May. (Henderson Hall News, Volume 22, Number 12) In addition to supporting Henderson Hall Marines this year, MCUF has also supported professional reading program library requests for 100 Marine Corps units and PME events benefiting over 32,500 Marines.

Every Marine Corps unit is allowed to submit one unit library request and one PME event request per calendar year for the Command Support Program. The request is sent to Sherry Schmid, Programs Manager. The requirements information for both types of requests can be found on the MCUF's website at www.mcuf.org under the Command Support Program. Units are contacted with 48 business hours of receiving their request.

"Our mission is more important that ever in today's operational environment," said Schmid. "I believe that these experiences and opportunities are an essential service to Marines that help them to remain the premier fighting force in the world."

Schmid feels that MCUF is an organization that provides Marines with educational opportunities that probably would not otherwise be available.

"We are able to fulfill our mission thanks to our donors and by being able to support more Marines each year," said Schmid. "The proof of our importance comes directly from the Marines who benefit from our programs."

MCUF supports Marine Corps units worldwide.
