Soldiers shape up with peaceful yoga
Sunday, July 16, 2006
PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) - The peaceful mediation, balancing and stretching of yoga is catching on with some members of the military. Marines, Navy Seals and Army Rangers, say yoga helps them to relax, become more flexible and improves their balance.

Retired Admiral Tom Steffens spent 34 years as a Navy Seal and practices yoga regularly. Steffens says he sometimes feels out of place in classes filled with mostly young women, but he says yoga has helped him keep his body healthy.

Marine Lieutenant and flight student Alan Zarracina comes to a Pensacola yoga class several times a week. He says yoga has improved his posture and concentration while flying.

The August edition of Fit Yoga, the nation's second-largest yoga magazine, features a photo of two Naval aviators doing yoga poses in full combat gear aboard an aircraft carrier.

New York yoga master David Life says he believes yoga can help soldiers find peacefulness within themselves. And Life, who has taught celebrities including Sting and Russell Simmons, he hopes yoga will help soldiers to become better peace makers.
