A poolee inspired me to write this:

Meps: Everyone is still exited and eager at the prospect of becoming a Marine.
we walked among other potential service members heading to the other branches with pride because we chose the best, they chose the easy branches. A little arrogant.

Later at the hotel:
We are all swapping poolee stories, hopes, dreams, and delusions of Marine Corps grandeur. Joking, having a good 'ol time...Hey were about to begin a great adventure, were all exited and eager...YES!

On bus to PI:
We are all still swapping our pre-boot delusions about our future USMC Careers, sharing an overall jovial mood on the bus. Still eager, still exited. "YES! Marine Corps baby!"

On bus within 40 miles of PI: The overall jovial mood had subsided within the last 50 or so miles. Some folks still conversing, others are all quiet, mainly because of the time of day and darkness. Guy in front keeps calling out the distance left until we reach PI. Excitement and eagerness turning into nervousness. "Marine...Corps...yay....."

On bus 10 miles to PI: Everyone deathly quiet, contemplating. Guy in front of bus ceased the distance updated. Pitch black in the bus and nothing but an abyss of darkness outside. Excitement gone, intense apprehension has taken over. "Marine Corps...(gulp)"

On bus at PI gate: Everyone is scared sh**less. Are minds are all racing. Butterflies in stomach feel like condors. Not a sound on the bus. All excitement, delusion, jovial attitudes have been replaced by creeping fear and anxiety

Bus stops: Calm before storm, DI enters bus.....
