U.S. Army to Drop Green Uniform, Return to Traditional Blue

The U.S. Army plans to eliminate the green uniform worn by its soldiers for more than 100 years and switch back to traditional blue worn by those fighting the Revolutionary War.

Everyday-wear uniforms will include a dark blue jacket, light blue trousers and grey shirt, the Army said. Soldiers' dress uniforms are already blue. Soldiers will begin wearing the new garb by the middle of next and all soldiers must have them by the end of 2011, the Army said. A date for eliminating the green uniform hasn't been set.

The change will simplify the uniform, Army Chief of Staff General Peter Schoomaker said when announcing the decision earlier this month. The blue was ordered for the Continental Army by General George Washington to contrast with the red of the British and help distinguish friend from foe on battlefields obscured by smoke.

``We have all these variations of uniforms -- green, blue and white,'' Schoomaker said in a statement. The new uniform ``reflects simplicity, quality, utility and tradition,'' he said.

Some soldiers already have these uniforms, though the fabric and fit will be improved to give them a more tailored look, the Army said. The Army doesn't plan to change the recently adopted combat uniform, which has a camouflage pattern in grey, green and tan hues. The all-white uniform rarely used by soldiers also will be eliminated, the Army said.

Union soldiers wore blue uniforms during the Civil War and the Indian Wars. When the cavalry arrived at the last minute in movies about the old west, they rode up in blue.

The development of smokeless powder and changes in weapons and battle tactics made bright uniforms a liability, so armies switched to green and khaki, making soldiers less visible to the enemy.

Since 1902, the U.S. Army has worn a standard uniform that was khaki or some version of green. In World War II and Korea, soldiers wore olive drab uniforms or ``pinks and greens,'' a uniform of pinkish gray trousers and a dark olive-drab jacket or blouse. The army switched to the current green uniforms in 1954.

Kenneth Preston, sergeant major of the army, said he had talked with soldiers about their preferences for a uniform.

``It was always about 85-90 percent of hands that showed support for the Army blue uniform,'' he said in a statement.

The Army is not going to look like the Revolutionary or Cival War era soldiers, they're going to look like the Airforce. :D
I really hope the Corps doesn't get rid of our the green service uniforms. Although they're not at snazzy as the Dress Blues, they have that "were here to fight" look to them. Seeing a Marine in Dress Blues is awe inspiring. Seeing a Marine wearing that green service uniform you know he/she means buisness.

My father was a Marine in WWII. He got out, hated civilian life and joined the Army Air Corps. Went to OCS and became an Air Force Officer. Long story short, He loved the Corps' uniform, tolerated the Air Cops uniform and HATED the Air Force uniform. My father was buried as a MARINE last year. “Once a Marine, Always a Marine.”<O:p</O:p
I am sure he is guarding the gates of Heaven in his (USMC) Dress Blues.

Looks like we'll have two branches of the armed forces imitating bus drivers.

You have to give the Army credit for trying. After all, there are only "A Few Good Men"

U.S. Army No Longer Green
Strategy Page

June 19, 2006: The U.S. Army is no longer green. After a century of green uniforms, the last one is being retired. The new "Class A" uniform will be the current blue "Dress Uniform". This in response to decades old efforts by the troops, to drop the green "Class A" uniform (bus driver like green jackets and pants, with light brown shirt and tie) and go to "dress blues" for all occasions, with appropriate changes in tie, shirt, etc. The new Class A uniform is simply the existing dress uniform. This uniform, unlike the green Class A's, that were introduced in 1954, is based on the 19th century dress uniform. Most enlisted troops do not have the dress blue uniform, because they have to buy it themselves, and that is optional for most troops. But beginning next year, troops will be issued dress blues in stead of the old green uniform. All soldiers are expected to have the new blue uniform by 2011.

All this is part of the long time "uniform envy" soldiers have had for marines. The USMC has always sported the most impressive dress uniform, and young enlisted marines were glad to spend at least $300 to buy themselves one. Many career army types have been campaigning for a spiffier Class A uniform, and something in blue, preferably with a belted jacket. But instead of a new uniform design, the army simply made the current dress blues the new Class As.

The army had, unofficially, decided to finally get rid of the 1950s era green "Class A" uniform two years ago. These green Class As were disliked from the beginning, because troops thought it made them, "look like bus drivers." For years the proposed replacement has been the current army dress blue uniform. The only modifications will be the color of the shirts. For formal occasions, a white shirt would be worn instead of a grey one. The Class A uniform is not actually worn that much, with most troops wearing BDUs (Battle Dress Uniform, with the camouflage pattern) or the Class A uniform without the jacket. The BDUs come in several different shades, none of them featuring much green. So after a century, the green is gone. The army is also eliminating the all white tropical dress uniform, which was rarely used.
