Marine With 3/25 Gets Homecoming 1 Year After Injury

Sun Jun 11, 11:50 AM ET

A sergeant with the Brook Park-based 3rd Battallion 25th Marines who was seriously injured in Iraq more than a year ago got a welcome home celebration Saturday.

Sgt. Shurvon Phillip, 25, was riding in a Humvee last May when it was attacked.

"He wanted to serve his country, and he was very proud to go to Iraq," said Phillip's mother, Gail Ulerie.

Phillip's mother said the Humvee blew up exactly where Phillip was sitting.

He suffered a traumatic brain injury, and both of his lungs collapsed. Doctors said Phillip almost didn't make it.

Family, friends and members of his unit welcomed him back home.

His mother has been at his side since he was transferred from al-Asad Medical Center in Iraq to the Louis Stokes Cleveland Veterans Medical Center in May.

"It's been a long hard year. We've had a long tough journey," Ulerie said.

Phillip's mother said he will hopefully go home in the next nine days. She said he will need 24-hour in-home care.
