Camp Pendleton colonel is Marines' greatest griller

Col. Stewart Navarre of Camp Pendleton kept his cool while working over the hot coals to win a steak cook-off against grilling champions from nine other Marine bases around the country.
Navarre, chief of staff for Marine Corps bases west of the Mississippi, prepared his Combat Steaks, New York strips topped with sliced portobello mushrooms and crumbled feta and blue cheeses, to claim the prize in the showdown last week in New York's Times Square.
Weber organized a series of Marine grilling competitions and collected the winning and runner-up recipes in a cookbook, “Command of the Grill: A Salute to Steak” (Weber, $10). All proceeds from the book will go to four charities that assist wounded Marines and the families of Marines killed in the line of duty.
Navarre had earned the right to represent Camp Pendleton at the national event by winning a grilling contest at the base last October. His recipe, which he credited to his wife, Yana, appeared in a story about the grill-off in last week's Food section. It is available online at www.commandofthegrill.com.
Hundreds of people gathered in Times Square to watch Navarre and the nine other finalists prepare their steak recipes on charcoal grills.
“I was absolutely honored to be part of the competition and absolutely surprised to win,” said Navarre, the highest-ranking officer among the finalists. “The opportunity to participate with my fellow Marines in this event and support the four charities made it very special to us.”
Navarre brings back to Camp Pendleton a prize package that includes a luxury Weber gas grill and a grilling lesson and dinner for 10 with chef Jamie Purviance, author of several Weber grilling books. Purviance was one of the judges of the grilling competition.
“Command of the Grill: A Salute to Steak,” a large-format paperback with lots of photos, also includes steak recipes from famous former Marines such as Ed McMahon, Ken Norton and Lee Trevino. Money from the sale of the book will go to the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund, the Wounded Warrior Project, Fisher House and the Marine Corps Law Enforcement Foundation.
