Physical training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot is scheduled to resume Thursday, according to base officials. Training was stopped because of an outbreak of streptococcus A and the death of a recruit from a bacterial infection.

The stand-down was to allow recruits to rest and avoid becoming sick from the Strep A bacteria, which was discovered in 185 Marines tested on Sunday.

No new recruits were hospitalized Tuesday, but about 24 recruits and Depot staff are still in the hospital, according to Major General Jan Huly, commander of MCRD.

Since the outbreak began at MCRD last week, 126 people have been hospitalized. One recruit remains in critical condition after being diagnosed with Strep A pneumonia, base officials said.
