The Marine Corps' Harrier attack jet is the most dangerous military airplane flying today, with a higher rate of major accidents than any other Air Force, Navy, Army or Marine plane in service, an investigation found.

Forty-five Marines have died in 143 noncombat accidents in the three decades since the corps acquired the Harrier, renowned for its ability to lift off like a helicopter, hover, then roar up and away in search of targets.

The pilots who were killed while flying the so-called "jump jet" were some of America's most skilled aviators, and many of their deaths were preventable, according to the investigation.
