— Matt Davis told his mom, “Most Marines will only see that man in a picture.”

PFC Davis got to shake his hand.

General Michael W. Hagee, Commandant of the Marine Corps, presented the Purple Heart to PFC Matt Davis of Blooming Grove this week. Davis remains hospitalized at Bethesda Naval Hospital, where he has been undergoing treatment since May 5 for injuries sustained in battle in Iraq.

Davis has begun physical therapy treatments, according to Pam Davis, his mother. She has been with him since he arrived at Bethesda.

He is undergoing more surgery for injuries to his left arm and left leg. Davis is also undergoing wound cleaning procedures regularly. His wounds require regular cleaning and treatment due to the high levels of bacteria found in Iraqi sand, his mother said.

Two of Davis’ fellow soldiers are also hospitalized in Maryland. Each of the soldier’s mothers were presented with gifts sent to them by Davis’unit leader in Iraq on Mother’s Day.

Bev Young, wife of Florida congressman Bill Young, gave Davis a gift to present to his mother, Pam. A dinner for mothers at the hospital was held later that day.

“The best Mother’s Day gift of all was having Matt home,” she said.
