— A Decatur native will head to the Big Apple next week to compete against other Marines in the nationally televised “Command of the Grill” cooking contest.

Marine Capt. Robert L. Burton of Quantico, Va., nephew of state Sen. Terry Burton, R-Newton, will compete against 10 other finalists from military installations across the country.

The competition, to be held Thursday at Times Square in New York City, will be televised on “Good Morning America,” ABC’s morning news program.

Capt. Burton competed against 100 active Marines and Marine Reservists to win the base semifinals at Quantico.

Winning recipes from the competition, along with steak recipes from famous former Marines like Lee Trevino and Ed McMahon, will be featured in a book titled Command of The Grill, A Salute to Steak.

The books aims to raise $500,000 to improve the lives of Marines injured in service and to support the families of those wounded or killed in the line of duty.

“I’m excited and proud my son won,” said Burton’s father, Robert Burton of Newton, “but mostly I’m excited and proud of the charity they are involved with. It is such a good cause, and it doesn’t matter if you support the Iraq War or the president; this is about the troops.”

“Command of The Grill” was the brainchild of two Weber Grill employees.

After meeting a high-ranking general and self-avowed grilling fanatic who recounted stories of how Marines under his command used grilling as an outlet to relax and de-stress from their demanding and dangerous jobs, the Weber employees suggested that perhaps there was something the company could do to support the troops.

Because Weber had published several best-selling cookbooks, they decided to use the recipes gathered from the competition to produce Command of The Grill, A Salute to Steak. Every cent of the $10 purchase price will go to Marine charities.

The four charities involved — Injured Marine Semper Fi-Fund, Wounded Warrior Project, Fisher House and Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation — provide free services.

Fisher Houses are a “home away from home” for families of patients receiving medical care at major military and Veterans Affairs medical centers. The charities also provide financial assistance to injured Marines and other service members, benefits counseling and representation before the Department of Veterans Affairs.
